What Kate Likes on April 7th, 2023
I love mentioning Barthes and Batman within sentences of each other.
It’s been a hectic week in this corner of Long Island, and I haven’t had as much time as usual to read/watch/listen/enjoy things peacefully. So we’re doing a short list today. Sound good? Okay:
After nearly a year, the Heartstopper webcomic updated last Friday. The whole comic (and the TV show) is sweet and easy and comforting. The webcomic came back at the perfect time for me personally, and I’ve spent a not-insignificant amount of time revisiting it this week.
This week’s episode of Abbott Elementary, “Educator of the Year,” was one of the series’ best—which is obviously saying something. The perfect balance of truly hilarious and deeply earnest, as we’ve all come to expect. Plus the cold open is exactly how I feel about Androids (hello Cassidy :) ).
My kid cousin got me this very real April Fool’s cover for Batman #134 (another great issue from this Zdarsky-led run, which I’ve written about for the newsletter before). I never would have bought it for myself, even though it’s been delighting me since DC revealed it. It makes me giggle!
My Poetry and Comics class has been on fire the last two weeks, y’all. We had great conversations about all the assigned readings, but the conversations we had about Barthes’ “The World of Wrestling” and Sontag’s “Notes on ‘Camp’” are still rattling around in my head.
Unfortunately I am in fact a boygenius bitch. I’ve been listening to the record on repeat. My favorite song is probably “Not Strong Enough,” but “True Blue” does indeed make me cry.
Like I said: short list. Also I have been reading X-Men comics and prepping for Monday’s class and snuggling with my cat. All enjoyable things! Now I will spend the rest of my Friday writing up some highlights from the conclusion of the truly excellent Flash event “One-Minute War.” What a life!
